Vol.4
1
【Mishiki-no-orochi】
A three-headed snake with a red, yellow, and white head. Originally a video cord cable that wasn’t really used for anything. He is much larger than a home, and his fangs produce lightening.
However, he is always unmotivated. This lack of motivation makes people who love games, especially children, highly irritable.
2
【Rari-no-kaicho】
A monster bird who loves peeping in on people’s lives.
If you don’t want to be peeped on, you have to carry around a padlock with you at all times. He is said to bring about good luck if you see him because he is covered in blue feathers, but in actuality he is just exposing himself to anyone that can see him.
His legs are tough, and if you collect all his eight feathers scattered throughout the world, he develops the power to lift a whale. However, this also causes some type of disaster to occur somewhere in the world in the same moment.
3
【Ichiziku】
This yōkai lurks at the beach with his one leg. He appears suddenly when the tide recedes.
If he stares at you, you will experience extreme stomach pains or have massive diarrhea.
One theory says that this yōkai was actually a bird that came to catch fish.
4
【Kagoguruma】
A triplet ogre that possesses shopping carts left out in the wild. (In Japan, shopping carts are often left out in the streets.)
The fast ogre pushes the cart and runs while the large ogre kicks people,
as the small ogre acts as the eyes. The three work together to run over and attack people.
5
【Yabin】
A yōkai born from a cat repellent plastic bottle.
He lurks alone along homes and electric poles. (He is not very good at repelling cats.)
People are disgusted of him and avoid him because he was left outside for so long, and his anger gives him the power to produce a flash of light from his eyes, sometimes causing fires.
6
【Tōdenki】
The chief of Denki (For more details about Denki, refer to the second volume of “Zoku: Modern yōkai Scroll”)
He became the chief after being deemed the strongest Denki ogre that were let out of homes due to fires caused by electric leakage.
Since he has control over high voltage electricity running across power lines, he is strong. If he starts raging, he will definitely cause disaster.
7
【Himon-dako】
yōkai of multi-outlet extension cords. He has control over electric heat and fires. He loves eating dust.
He gathers energy over many years before creating fires. He is related to Head Denki.
He cannot be cooked and eaten like an octopus.
8
【Akiei-no-uo】
An electric guitar yōkai with six fins on his back. He is a sad yōkai born when a boy who wanted to be a rock star bought a guitar that was eventually abandoned or given up on.
If you take out the guitar and start playing it or cleaning it, he goes away. If he soaks up your blood and sweat before performing the ritual of screaming and smashing the guitar on stage, he becomes your guardian spirit.
9
【Nejimaki】
A yōkai that triggers feelings of frustration and impatience on the person it possesses.
Once possessed, it causes impatience not only in yourself, but forces you to rush other people even when there is no need to. The people that were rushed also become possessed by a Nejimaki. This is how Nejimaki spread to the modern world.
10
【Mokumokuren】
A yōkai born from blinds that fell apart from old age and use. He causes confusion and panic in humans with only three pieces of string. There have been many accounts of eyes appearing on him, similar to the yōkai Mokumokuren. This is said to have been caused by the spirit of a police detective who was killed on duty.
11
【Hakimushi】
A yōkai born from dirty school shoes. He is not a cockroach.
He scurries around the hallways, spreading terrible odor. If you flip him over, it will rain the next day.
12
【Yasoya-bakin】
A yōkai born from a piano in the music room. He has two elephant legs in the front, and one leg with cow hooves
and another with horse hooves in the back. He is large, very heavy, and cries out in a frightening low voice that echoes throughout the building. However, he produces beautiful music when he grits his teeth.
If you hear music during the night from a school music room and there is no one there, it is the doing of this yōkai.
As the name suggests, he has 88 teeth, with which he has chewed off the fingers of countless pianists.
13
【Usui-bō】
A yōkai born from a recorder filled with water. He is depicted as being half octopus, half human.
He triggers a sense of disgust in people. This yōkai causes you to be suspicious of your recorder, even though no one else but you has touched it.
14
【Bototsu】
A yōkai born out of ink. He appears in front of stressed out writers and ruins their manuscripts.
He loves writers’ despair, and the more despair a writer feels, the darker and blacker the color of the ink gets.
15
【Magari-kōbe】
A yōkai born from school lunch spoons that were bent with force by kids claiming to have ESP.
A victim of the supernatural power fad, this yōkai bends people’s faces and necks.
16
【Sarunashi】
A yōkai born from a school desk that kids stuff with trash. He appears in front of elementary school students who are bad at cleaning.
After suffering from his life as a trash can for six years, he whispers “Sarunashi, Sarunashi” (Meaning “You think you can leave? You can’t leave.”) to his owner near graduation season, and then buries the student in a pile of trash.
